MLTC was created by nine First Nations located in north-west Saskatchewan who have constitutionally recognized aboriginal rights and Treaty Rights under Treaties #6, #8 and #10.   The primary purpose of MLTC is to serve those First Nations in their aspirations for cultural, economic and political autonomy.  As a private sector employer engaged primarily in promoting and serving the interests of the member First Nations, MLTC asserts its right to provide preferential treatment to First Nations people, giving them priority in decisions on employment matters such as hiring, and this can extend to measures such as opening competitions only to First Nations people.

MLTC is seeking a keen, dedicated individual to fill the full time, permanent position of Accounting Officer. The Accounting Officer is responsible for performing data entry and related duties in disbursing accounts payable to individuals, suppliers, MLFN First Nations, or other entities. This includes reviewing the payment request, coding and filing the documents, in compliance with the MLTC policies and procedures. The Accounting Officer must be very familiar with the funding agreements and must work very closely with the Budget Analyst to ensure that expenses have been coded properly and complete re-allocation of costs if necessary. Duties will also include the preparation of year end audit information. The Accounting Officer must be able to provide accurate, timely and concise work. The Accounting Officer must pay attention to detail, be approachable and must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills. The Accounting Officer must able to multi-task and work with minimum supervision and with constant interruptions. As well as being able to work well within the accounting group team, the Accounting Officer must also be able to perform other administrative duties of the finance department as required.

 

Position Duties: 

  • Accounts payable processing:
    • Review supplier invoices, match to purchase orders.
    • Reconcile supplier statements and do follow-up with suppliers.
    • Code and input invoices.
    • Prepare and post payments.
    • Post applicable general ledger batches.
    • Maintain filing of paid invoices.
  • Accounts receivable processing:
    • Input all revenue received to appropriate programs.
    • Invoice outside funding agents for any recoverable expenses as per direction received.
    • Monitor and maintain accounts receivable.
  • Process employee travel claims for payment.
  • Process First Nation Representatives per diem claims (meeting attendance).
  • Prepare bank deposits, perform daily bank duties.
  • Bank reconciliations.
  • General ledger maintenance including journal entries and reconciling of balance sheet accounts.
  • Preparing and issuing of payroll through payroll web-based application.
  • Performing other payroll related duties required
  • Work closely with Budget Analyst to provide financial reports/claims to funding agencies as required.
  • Work closely with Budget Analyst on budget maintenance and forecasting.
  • Work closely with Budget Analyst to prepare for year-end audit.
  • Perform other duties as required by the MLTC Accounting department.

 

Qualifications:

Minimum:

  • Education in Accounting and/or Office Procedures.
  • 3 years of relevant experience in accounting/finance
  • Appropriate combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • Extensive knowledge of accounting systems, budgets and internal controls.

Preferred:

  • Two (2) years of relevant experience with a computerized accounting system (ACCPAC).

 

Other:

  • Proficient with computers, i.e., Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and meet tight deadlines.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment with accounting staff, program managers, and the nine (9) First Nation’s communities.
  • Effective attention to detail and a high degree of entry accuracy.
  • Able to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Strong work ethic and positive team attitude.
  • An understanding and knowledge of First Nation’s culture.
  • Valid driver’s license
