MLTC was created by nine First Nations located in north-west Saskatchewan who have constitutionally recognized aboriginal rights and Treaty Rights under Treaties #6, #8 and #10. The primary purpose of MLTC is to serve those First Nations in their aspirations for cultural, economic and political autonomy. The MLTC Health & Social Development Department is seeking a dynamic, motivated individual to fill the full time, permanent position of Health Promotion Specialist. The Health Promotion Specialist (formerly known as Community Health Representative Advisor) will focus on Health Promotion and is responsible for developing, implementing, and assessing relevant health information, with a specific focus on tobacco cessation and overall health promotion for MLFN membership.
DUTIES: (include but not limited to)
• Develop culturally relevant educational materials and resources that address the specific health needs of MLFN membership.
• Design, implement, and manage tobacco cessation and health promotion programs tailored to MLFN children, youth, adults.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with MLFN leaders, community members, and local health organizations.
• Facilitate community workshops, seminars, and events to raise awareness about tobacco-related health risks and promote healthy lifestyle choices
• Promote health literacy and empower individuals to make informed decisions about their health
• Prepare reports and presentations for stakeholders, including funding agencies and community partners.
• Manage program resources, including budgets, supplies.
• Stay informed about emerging trends and evidence-based practices in tobacco control and health promotion.
• Other duties assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS/ABILITIES
Minimum:
• Certification in Health Education or similar designation.
• 1 – 2 years of experience in health promotion, tobacco control, or related field.
Preferred:
• Bachelor’s degree in public health, Health Promotion, Social Work, Indigenous Studies, or a related field.
• Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in health promotion, tobacco control, or a related field, with a demonstrated understanding of First Nations health issues and cultural competence.
Other:
• Familiarity with First Nation/Indigenous cultures, traditions, and community dynamics; understanding of tobacco-related health issues and effective cessation strategies.
• Ability to fluently speak and understand Cree and/or Dene is considered a valuable asset
• Willingness to travel extensively and possession of a valid Class 5 driver’s license
