PRINCIPAL – Birch Narrows Dene Community School

Birch Narrows Dene Community School (BNDCS) is accepting applications to fill the position of Principal. Birch Narrows Dene Nation is a community of approximately 750-800 people situated in beautiful Northern Saskatchewan along the shores of Turnor Lake. The school accommodates students from Grades N-12. The school is an up-to-date facility that features a gym with change rooms, a multi-purpose room, a library, a home economics room, PAA room, science and computer labs, and several resource areas.

The school is proud to establish a community of learners through positive relationships which promote Dene/Cree/Michif cultures, languages, and traditional knowledge. A multitude of land-based education opportunities are provided throughout the year and at the newly completed school cabin, which incorporates a holistic approach to bridging Indigenous ways of knowing and academics to prepare students to succeed in the education system.

 

Qualifications: 

Minimum:

  • Bachelors of Education degree from an accredited institution will be considered and also provide a timeline to obtaining a Masters of Education.

Preferred:

  • Masters of Education degree

Other:

  • Possession of a Saskatchewan Professional “A” Teacher’s Certificate;
  • Must have a minimum of five (5) years of Teaching & School Administration experience.
  • Possesses strong ‘Instructional Leadership’ skills for teacher growth in a yearly teacher appraisal process.
  • The Principal will have extensive knowledge and lived experiences of Canada’s Indigenous Peoples – to integrate community culture, values, and history into the curriculum and school’s culture and climate.
  • The Principal will have knowledge and lived experiences in being a trauma-informed leader.
  • Experienced in local FN governance, ministry of education, and federal policies/procedures that will ensure staff unity while managing all school aspects and overseeing an effective/efficient ‘Education Team’.
  • The Principal will follow the BNDCS land-based educational calendar and will involve elders, students, families, & community members in school & events planning.
  • The Principal will set high standards and expectations for academic achievement, especially in the areas of literacy and numeracy and will involve students, families, & community members.
  • The Principal must possess excellent leadership skills in communication & will demonstrate what healthy, positive, and high-functioning classrooms are.
  • The Principal will assist and provide supports to teachers in adjusting teaching styles and curriculum as required for inclusivity, using differentiated instruction.
