MLTC was created by nine First Nations located in north-west Saskatchewan who have constitutionally recognized aboriginal rights and Treaty Rights under Treaties #6, #8 and #10.   The primary purpose of MLTC is to serve those First Nations in their aspirations for cultural, economic and political autonomy.  As a private sector employer engaged primarily in promoting and serving the interests of the member First Nations, MLTC asserts its right to provide preferential treatment to First Nations people, giving them priority in decisions on employment matters such as hiring, and this can extend to measures such as opening competitions only to First Nations people.

  • This competition is open to all applicants; and
  • Preference will be given to qualified First Nations applicants or other Indigenous applicants who self-declare as being a First Nations person or of other Indigenous ancestry.

The Meadow Lake Tribal Council is seeking a highly motivated individual to fill a casual position of Community Champion for the Canoe Lake Cree First Nation. Significant training and mentorship in Community Energy Planning will be available to the successful candidate.

Duties (include but not limited to)

Smart Renewables and Electrification Pathways Program (SREP)

  • Gathering community energy data (natural gas, propane, gasoline, diesel, electricity and water usage), compiling and sharing the information with the SREP team.
  • Development and implementation of a community Energy Plan.

Indigenous Land Based Conservation (ILABC)

  • Participate in safety training related to camp operations.
  • Actively contribute/take part in cultural science camps, including the creation of tipis, setting up tents, hauling food, keeping records of meetings and expenses associated with camps and perform related activities such as ice fishing, handling, assist in navigation for groups working for the program with moose tracking or similar activities.
  • Assist in translating documents from English to Cree and participate in online posting/archiving activities concerning documents/information generated through the programs.

Required Qualifications & Skills: 

Minimum:

  • One to three years of relevant experience and supervisory skills, preferably in a First Nations Organization

Preferred:

  • Post-secondary certificate or degree in a relevant discipline
  • Three or more years of work experience in an area related to First Nations governance, administration and/or communications is preferred

Other:

  • Experience or training in a renewable or community energy related field is considered an asset.
  • Proficiency in computers: i.e., Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook)
